Pokémon GO! (because everyone's playing)

Right after I arrived to Arkansas, 「Pokémon GO」was released and became so popular that no days have passed without seeing someone playing it. I grew up in a Pokémon generation (Gen Poké) which made it hard for me not to download the app.

So why not talk something about the Pokémon...

By the way, I have been an I phone user since I was in Japan. When I moved to AR and got a new phone, all apps and settings were properly transferred yet I own both Japanese and American i tunes account hence I need to switch on/off to different stores depending on which apps I need to update.

Given the fact that I happened to be logged in to my Japanese i tunes account when Pokémon Go was released in the states (which was a few weeks before the release in Japan) I felt lazy enough not to switch into an american account. So I finally downloaded the app when it became available in Japanese store.

BUT!（well, maybe it's just me who did not know this）even if you download an app from Japanese account, if your language setting on the phone itself is English, it automatically changes the app language into English.

So for instance,ヒトカゲ(Hitokage) becomes→Charmander, フシギダネ(Fushigidane) becomes→Bulbasaur, ゼニガメ(Zenigame) becomes→Squirtle...

As a Japanese representative of generation Poké, this was a serious issue that was not acceptable.

When I see those pokemons' names in English, I feel like,

'... Who the heck are you!?'

I want to catch Fushigidane as Fushigidane, and not when it's Bulbasaur!

So I had to switch my phone's language setting to Japanese only to display Pokémons' names in Japanese...and I think that was a good enough reason😤

Some Pokémons survived without getting new names when released overseas, and needless to say, Pikachu is one of them.

In Japanese, "Pika pika" is a word that describes something that shines or sparkles. "Chu (or Chu Chu)" is squeaking noise that mice make.

So this electric mouse like looking Pokémon was named "Pikachu" from it's characteristics.

It makes sense in Japanese but I sometime wonder how these names were treated overseas when not changed to English names.

(well maybe we were all too busy becoming a Pokémon master so the meanings of the names were not important anyways...)

There is another interesting Pokémon that may be worth introducing.

If you have played the very first Pokémon where there were only 151 Pokémons in total, do you remember a Pokémon called Farfetch'd? (In Japanese, his name is Kamonegi, "Kamo"=duck, "Negi"=Leak)

In Japan, there is a saying "A duck comes carrying a leak on his back", which means like, "good things that come together make the situation even better. (because if you want to eat a duck hot-pot, you must have a leak and if a duck comes carrying a leak, it is much less trouble for you)

Unless you know the meaning of this saying, the image of the Farfetch'd must have been quite confusing.

「Why on earth is this bird holding a leak???」

...anyhow, I'm glad he somehow made it overseas.

When I first played Pokémon I was in an elementally school. It has been about 20 years since then and who would ever thought back then, that 20years later you would still be throwing Pokéballs....

Pokémon phenomenon is now taking over not only apparel industry but it's also becoming a piece of art.

私がアーカンソーに移住してすぐに爆発的に流行りだしたアプリ、そう「ポケモンGO」!

その後日本でも配信が開始され、がっつりポケモン世代の私も気がつけば体が勝手にダウンロードしてしまっておりました！こっちでも毎日のようにポケッている人を見かけますが、圧倒的に大人が多いような印象です。

ということで今回はポケモンのお話をば。。。

ちなみに私は日本にいた頃からI phoneを使っておりましたが、こっちに来て新しいI phoneに切り替えをし、日本の携帯に入っていたアプリなどもそのまま移行できたのですが、I tunes storeのアカウントを日本のアカウントとアメリカのアカウントの２つを保有しており、アプリによってはわざわざアカウントの切り替えをしないとアップデートができない！という面倒な事態が発生しております。

そんなこともあって、ポケモンGo　(こっちでは「Pokémon GO」と表記されます。Eになぜアクセントをつけるのか、ご存知の方がいらっしゃいましたら是非教えてください）が最初にアメリカで配信をされた時、アメリカのi tunesアカウントを使えばダウンロードできたのですが、面倒くさがりな私は切り替え作業をするのが億劫だったので、日本のアカウントで配信が可能になってからようやくダウンロードしたのでした。

しかし！（そういうもんなのかはわかりませんが）たとえ日本のアカウントからアプリをダウンロードしても、携帯の言語設定が英語の場合、アプリ内の言語表示も自動的に英語になってしまいます。

てな訳で、ポケモンの名前も英語になって表示されてしまうのです。

ヒトカゲ→Charmander（チャルマンダーみたいな発音）、フシギダネ→Bulbasaur（ボルバソーみたいな発音）、ゼニガメ→Squirtle（スクアートルみたいな発音）てな具合です。

これはポケモン世代に育った私としてはどうしても許せない問題でした。

「あ、野生のフシギダネがあらわれた！」が「A wild Bulbasaur appeared!」になってしまうのですから、「いや、君誰やねん」状態です。

冷静になると本当にどうでもいい話ですが、私はゼニガメをゼニガメのままでゲットしたいんだ！[スクアートル]じゃ面白さ半減なんだ！・・・てことでそのためにわざわざ携帯の言語設定を日本語に変更したことは、あまり大きい声では言わないようにしています。

昔熱中して遊んでいた当時は不思議ともなんとも思わなかったのですが、よくよく考えるとポケモンの名前って面白い奴がいっぱいです。

例えば彼！ワンリキーという名のポケモンですが、進化するごとにワンリキー→ゴーリキー→カイリキーとなります。

腕力→剛力→怪力...って、確かに強そう。

ちなみに彼、英語ではMachop→Machoke→Machampと進化するらしく、おぉ！なんだか英語でもそれっぽい雰囲気を保ってる！とちょっと感心です。

ポケモン関連でもう一つお話をさせていただきますと、私が昔ポケモンで遊んでいた時代はまだ１５１匹だけでしたが、その中に「カモネギ」という名のポケモンがいたことを覚えている方はいますでしょうか。

その名の通り、カモがネギ持ってるポケモンなのですが、「カモがネギを背負ってくる」という諺を耳にしたことがないと、日本人でないと「なんでこいつネギ持ってんの？？？」てなりますよね。

そんな感じで、海外進出の際は担当した人も色々苦労されたんだろうな、なんてことを考えながらポケモンマスターを目指す毎日でございます。

それにしても、私がゲームボーイでポケモンをやっていた時は小学生だったので、もうあれから２０年も経ったのですね。あの頃は２０年後の自分がまだモンスターボールを投げているとは、まさか思っていませんでしたよね、いやはや。

Tシャツだけではなく、今やアート作品の１部にもなってしまったこのポケモンGo現象はいつまで続くのでしょうか。
